Anna city is one of the most ancient Iraqi cities. Its historical existence belongs to more than four thousand years ago by the certification of the old cuneiform scripts which had been found in the Sumerian city Mary, which known its ruins nowadays as Al Hariri till that lies at the north of the Syrian city Albokamal.
The city had kept its name with close forms through ages as it is mentioned in the Babylonian, Assyrian, Aramaic, Syriac, Greek, Byzantine and Arabic scripts. Therefore it is Hanat, Annat, Anat, Aanat, Anah and Anna.
The city which is an island in its original location lied in the middle of Euphrates River and it was then extended to the western bank of the river after the increase in its population. The city is connected to its extension by a stone bridge which some of its ruins was existed in the middle of the river before the sinking of the city by the water of Al Qadisiyah dam in 1987 A.C. Anna city is far from western of Baghdad a distance about 325 Km and 100 Km from the Syrian borders.
The ruins of the city which I had seen personally since I had born in it and studied in its schools could be divided into two parts:
1. existing ruins which are: the Abasian octagonal stone minaret which had been moved to its new location before the sinking of the city, the ruins of palace (castle) in the north part of the city, the stone fence that surrounded the city and the ruins of the stone bridge which many of its supports was stand in the middle of the river.
2. Ruins that had been revealed by the deep explorations and excavations which had been performed by the Iraqi and Britain missions in many locations in the city such as the Amawy mosque and the Assyrian palace.
The research deals with detailed information about these ruins enhanced with maps and photos.
