The research deals with Jericho during the pre-Pottery Neolithic (A), and compares it with many sites of the ancient Near East. The main features in Jericho will be highlighted, most notably the wall, the tower that provided with a staircase, a passage, and the ditch. Various interpretations will be discussed about this exceptional architectural achievement, which is recognized as part of a defensive system to protect the site from external threats, considering Jericho the oldest fortified city in the world. It was accompanied by an increase in population, and social and political activity that shows the hierarchy, the notion emergence of the ruler, organized labour, and collective work energy. Moreover, the tower is considered a territorial boundary. Sometimes it is linked to religious rituals, symbolic values, astronomical, and mythology function. Also, the houses, burial practices, and distinctive commercial activity in Jericho will be discussed.
