مناظر المشرفين علي بناء المراکب الخشبية في مقابر الدولة القديمة Scenes of overseers of Wooden Boat Construction in the tombs of the Old Kingdom
Boat construction represents one of the frequently depicted scenes in the reliefs of the Old Kingdom tombs. Most of these scenes developed in the period between the 4th and 5th Dynasties. These depictions represented either papyrus skiff or wooden boat construction. Builders appeared in these scenes seriously engaged in their work in various postures; using different tools. Those reliefs represented a unique record of some construction techniques used by ancient Egyptian boat builders. Their work was supervised by overseers, guiding and managing the construction process.
The main interest of this study is to collect and classify scenes of overseers supervising the building of wooden boats. The study will focus on the scenes in the Old Kingdom tombs from various cemeteries including Giza, Saqqara, Abusir, Zawyet el-Maiyetin and Deir el-Gebrawi. Through using the descriptive analytical approach; a comparison will be employed between the scenes, resulting in the classification of those overseers' different postures, tools, profiles, hairstyles and even scene orientation. Based on this data, the study is expected to clear if this theme expressed major or minor changes from one cemetery to another or from the capital cemeteries to the local ones and if these changes have significance or not.
