يعتبر صيد الأسماک من أقدم الطرق التى عرفها الأنسان منذ القدم لکى يحصل على حاجته من الطعام، ويعتبر جزءآ من الحياة اليومية سعيآ وراء الطعام و القدرة على البقاء. کان للصيد أهمية کبري فى العصر الرومانى لعدة أسباب؛ بداية من صغار الصيادين الذين کانوا يعتمدوا على الصيد من أجل أعانة اسرهم الصغيرة أو من خلال تجار الأسماک الأغنياء الذين يتحکمون بتجارة الأسماک، کل ذلک يرتبط بطريقة أو بأخري بالأقتصاد الرومانى. حرص الرومان على تشجيع الصيد و الأهتمام بالصيادين و کانت الحکومة توفر لهم بعض الأمتيازات و تعمل على تصريف شئون الصيادين و منحت بعض التسهيلات فى دفع الضرائب.
إحتل البحر مکانة خاصة عند أهل الساحل الأفريقي حيث اعتبر البحر مصدرآ للخير، حيث صورت العديد من قطع الفسيفساء صيد الأسماک خاصة أن البحر الأبيض المتوسط فى العصر الرومانى نقطة وصل لا فصل، أطلق عليه الرومان" بحرنا".
ساعدت أرضيات الفسيفساء علي معرفة أنواع السفن و کذلک أساليب الصيد المتبعة في ذلک الوقت، و أنواع الاسماک و الکائنات البحرية التي کان يتم اصطيادها في البحر المتوسط، لذلک تعتبر لوحات الفسيفساء الرومانية وخاصة فى منطقة شمال أفريقيا بمثابة المصدر الموثق عن أدوات الصيد و طرق الصيد، و أنواع الأسماک و القواقع مع المصادر الأدبية.
Marine activity on Roman mosaics in North Africa
Abstract:
    Fishing is one of the oldest methods that people know throughout the history to get their food. Moreover, it’s considered part of their daily life routine to get food and to survive. Fishing played an important role in the Roman era for several reasons: Beginning with small fishermen who were dependent on fishing for the support of their small families or through rich fish merchants who controlled the fish trade, all of this is linked in one way or another to the Roman economy. Thus, Romans were keen to encourage Fishing and were concerned for fishermen. Furthermore, the government used to provide them with some privileges and work to manage the fishermen's affairs. Moreover, some facilities were granted to paying taxes.
    The sea occupied a special place among the people of the African coast, where the sea was considered a source of good, so many mosaic pieces depicted fishing, especially the Mediterranean Sea in the Roman era was a connection point not a separation, which the Romans called “our sea”.  The mosaics helped to know the types of ships as well as the fishing techniques used at that time, and the types of fish that were caught in the Mediterranean Sea, so the Roman mosaic, especially in North Africa, is considered a second source for documenting fishing, fishing tools and methods, types of vessels. Besides literary sources.
